What Lions Are About

Lions are men and women who volunteer their time and talents to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities. By conducting service projects and raising funds, Lions strive to help those in need, wherever need exists. The Lions' motto is "We Serve."

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their annual International Convention, challenging them to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time, service to the blind and visually impaired has become one of the association's most significant activities. That crusade has resulted in the establishment of Sight First, a global loss of sight prevention program.

In addition, Lions participate in service activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education, and research; work with the physically and mentally impaired; community welfare; international understanding and youth.

The association was founded in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1917. Although the youngest major service club organization, Lions Clubs International has grown to be the world's largest. Its 1.4 million members belong to clubs in over 180 countries and geographical locations. Lions Clubs International is headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA.

To the Lions, "We Serve" is not only a motto, but a definition and philosophy.

PCC Lion Edward D. Shivers III

PCC Lion Edward D. Shiver III died November 28, 2009 at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. He was born July 26, 1929 in Selma, AL. Ed grew up in Marion, AL where he graduated from Marion Military Institute High School and Jr. College. Upon graduation from MMI he attended Tulane University, New Orleans, LA where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the USAF and called to active duty during the Korean War. He later obtained his BS in Military Science at the University of Omaha. During his 28 year military career he served as a pilot, and was in numerous Command /Staff positions and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Ed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ann Pringle Shivers; daughters, Leigh S. Swindle(Thomas) of Birmingham, AL, Jeanne, S. Williams (Richard) of Fort Walton Beach, FL, and Susan S. Junkins (Paul) of Cary, NC; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 3rd at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church, 117 S Academy Street, Cary, NC. Visitation will be held in the Narthex one hour prior to the service. Grandsons and sons-in-law will act as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers are all members of Lions Club International. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery on February 19, 2010 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Cary, the North Carolina Lions Foundation and the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
